Fatty liver — the silent problem you can still reverse

One of the most common findings on ultrasound today. Usually silent, sometimes serious — and, caught early, largely reversible.

From Prof. Dr. Sherbat Khan Mandokhail's Gastro & Liver Center, QuettaUpdated October 2026

Fatty liver means extra fat has built up inside the liver cells. It has become extremely common — often discovered by chance on an ultrasound — and is closely linked with weight, diabetes, and cholesterol. Most people feel nothing at all, which is exactly why it gets ignored. In a portion of patients, however, the fat slowly inflames and scars the liver over years.

Who should get checked?

  • Anyone told on ultrasound that they have a “fatty liver” or “Grade I/II/III fat”
  • People with diabetes, high cholesterol, or excess weight
  • Raised liver tests (ALT/AST) on any blood report
  • Ongoing tiredness or vague right-upper-belly heaviness

What happens at the centre

The centre’s on-site ultrasound and laboratory allow the full picture in one visit: how much fat, whether the liver is inflamed, and whether any scarring has begun. Prof. Dr. Sherbat Khan then gives you a clear, realistic plan — targeted at your weight, sugar and cholesterol — and monitors the liver’s recovery over follow-up visits.

The honest good news

Caught early, fatty liver is one of the few liver conditions that can genuinely improve and even reverse. Gradual weight loss, control of sugar and cholesterol, and cutting sugary drinks and excess oil do more for the liver than any single tablet. The doctor’s job is to confirm where you stand and guide you honestly — before silent fat becomes permanent scarring.

Frequently asked questions

Is fatty liver dangerous?
Often it stays harmless — but in some patients it silently progresses to inflammation and scarring. That's why a proper assessment matters, especially with diabetes or raised liver tests.
Can fatty liver be cured?
Early fatty liver can genuinely reverse with gradual weight loss and control of sugar and cholesterol. The specialist confirms your stage and tracks the improvement.
Which tests will I need?
Usually an ultrasound plus liver blood tests — both available at the centre in the same visit, so you leave with answers, not just another appointment.
