Colonoscopy in Quetta — examining the large intestine safely

The gold-standard test for bleeding, long-standing bowel problems and colon-cancer screening — with polyp removal possible in the same sitting.

From Prof. Dr. Sherbat Khan Mandokhail's Gastro & Liver Center, QuettaUpdated October 2026

A colonoscopy examines the large intestine (colon) with a thin flexible camera. It is the most reliable way to find the cause of bleeding, chronic bowel complaints, and to detect — or prevent — colon cancer, because small growths (polyps) can be removed before they ever become dangerous.

When is colonoscopy advised?

  • Blood in the stool, or bleeding from the back passage
  • Long-standing constipation, diarrhoea, or a recent change in bowel habit
  • Ongoing lower abdominal pain
  • Unexplained weight loss or anaemia
  • Family history of colon cancer or polyps
  • Screening from around age 45–50, even without symptoms

What happens at the centre

The examination is performed by Prof. Dr. Sherbat Khan with sedation for comfort, and typically takes 20–30 minutes. If polyps are found, they can usually be removed during the same procedure — no separate operation. You rest briefly afterwards and go home the same day.

The preparation matters

A clean bowel is essential for an accurate examination, so you’ll be given a simple bowel-preparation plan (a special drink and diet instructions for the day before). The team explains everything clearly when your colonoscopy is scheduled — follow it properly and the test becomes both easier and more accurate.

Frequently asked questions

Is colonoscopy painful?
It is done under sedation, so most patients sleep lightly through it and remember very little. Mild bloating afterwards settles within hours.
Why is the bowel preparation so important?
The camera can only see what is clean. Good preparation means nothing is missed and the test rarely needs repeating.
Can polyps really be removed during the test?
Yes — most polyps are removed painlessly during the same colonoscopy, which is exactly how colon cancer is prevented.
