Endoscopy in Quetta — the stomach camera test, explained simply

A 10–15 minute examination that lets the specialist see your food pipe, stomach and upper intestine directly — and often treat the problem in the same sitting.

An upper GI endoscopy (patients often call it the “stomach camera test” or maiday ka test) uses a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera to examine the food pipe, stomach and the first part of the intestine. It is one of the most accurate ways to find the real cause of stomach problems — far more precise than guessing from symptoms alone.

When is endoscopy advised?

What happens at the centre

The procedure is performed by Prof. Dr. Sherbat Khan himself in the centre’s dedicated endoscopy suite. A numbing throat spray (and sedation where appropriate) keeps it comfortable. Most patients are surprised how quick it is — usually 10–15 minutes — and you go home the same day. If a biopsy or treatment (such as stopping a bleed or removing a small polyp) is needed, it can often be done during the same examination.

How to prepare

Come with an empty stomach — nothing to eat or drink for about 6–8 hours before the test. Bring your previous reports and medicine list. If sedation is planned, bring a family member who can accompany you home. The team will confirm the exact instructions when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is endoscopy painful?
No. A numbing throat spray, and sedation where needed, keeps it comfortable. Most patients describe mild pressure only, and the test itself takes about 10–15 minutes.
Do I get the result the same day?
Yes — the doctor sees the inside of the stomach live and explains the findings right after the test. If a biopsy is taken, that report takes a few days.
How much experience does the doctor have?
Prof. Dr. Sherbat Khan has performed endoscopic procedures for over two decades, including his years as Professor & Head of Gastroenterology at BMCH Quetta.
